Writer's Block
Gearing down for the weekend with the kid. SAT II Saturday AM (her, not me). Build that Permanent Record! Still awaiting final judgement on the technology I support. Can't think of much to blog now. Stranded a long way from football season.

Caught
Fracture, the movie last night, with Anthony Hopkins. He was actually in the movie, not with me. Too creepy. One of the better flicks I paid big bucks to see for a while. Also before that I rented
Harold and Kumar Go To White Castle. The next day I had a big Jones for White Castle. Later that day I was sorry.

Happy Memorial Day
Taking time from my busy weekend of doing nothing to remind all that tomorrow is Memorial Day, a day to reflect on the sacrifices of those that gave to preserve our freedoms. They made it possible and continue to make it possible to live in the greatest nation on earth.
A little disturbed at the kid lately. She thinks Dale Gribble is the coolest guy on KOTH. WTF?

Lazy Weekend
Rain conveniently descended upon the unflamingoed domicile, allowing me to goof off for the weekend. Not much going on. I have targeted which technologies to follow up at work, but that's an upcoming attraction. Took the car to the adjacent People's Republic for service, and I'm back now. Nothing like rotating your tires in the morning!

Decompressed
Martinified, flamingoed and resoberized, Cappy faces the future. Trying to dodge to pies and arrows of outrageous fate. The whole department is awaiting the decision on the future of our beloved DBMS, and anticipating it's demise somewere in the future. Looks like I'll head toward the future direction, and if no support at work head for the easier but less powerfull alternative. You can't fight the future, must embrace it. Or some such management happyspeak gobbeldygook. Mice, cheese, fish. Fuck 'em. Just hand me the manuals.

Wasting Away in Alteh Kokerville...
Buzzed now, from a couple double vodka martinis down in the People's Republic. Full of People's Republicans. Littlesis from Chicago send strange gifts. How am I going to play mono records now? Anybody have a turntable. Thanks to the gals from NYC on the nice postings previously. Later in the weak I'll sober and assess the situation about going to the next goddam software platform. But now I'm enjoying the buzz.

Oh yeah, it's very real. Change control is in control. Here's a word from our eager and despirate production support teams, and even more eager project managers:
Whine whine whine whine
whine whine whine whine whine whine whine whine whine whine whine whine whine whine whine whine whine whine whine whine bitch moan whine whine whine whine whine Whine Whine Whine Whine whine whine whine whine and whine some more!Lucky me. I get this the first week of enforcement. More whining too. Also, need to gage when to get off my flabby DBA ass and get into some new technology. I can do it, but it won't be roll over in bed, mumble a few soft words to Production Support and all is well any more. Too much like real work.Labels: techwhining

Charlie Parker
on CD now, as I quietly blog away and contemplate a future in alien and sometimes backward technologies. And I ponder the disappearance of Erica's postings, as well as the other guest bloggers at SWG, while I await the first irritating pages of the night.
Must track down tickets to the new bowl game for the fall.

Time to Haul
ass to the next hotdamn technology. During a prelim meating about a required upgrade of our software one of the muckymucks ordered an exit stategy as a required alternative. Nevermind that we'll be behind the 8-ball unless we upgrade. This may only be a straw man, but it's time to unwrinkle the grey matter and start to make tracks. Of course if this BS causes major dislocation it will be explained away as a piece of great stategic thought . You pick the excuse, er, buzzword used:
- Six Sigma
- Thought leadership
- Alien abduction
- All of the above
Anyway, we'll praise the remains after the crash. And the floggins will continue until morale improves. All this after a busy night on-call.

Who Knew?
that Martinis are a big babe magnet code word? It sure worked in the last posting! Even to Australia, and who knew there were babes there? Man, I wish I would have known that back in High School, instead of
swilling whatever was avaialable, and ending up in stupid fights with fratboys at football games (much more entertaining than the actual games themselves, but still, not much attraction to chicks). I wonder what other words work? Guess I'll try a few of these:Pimento
Flying Butress
Guacamole
Non-clustering index.
Back to on-call tomorrow. Fielded a few stray calls this weekend because I'm backing up strawboss. That means I get a double dose of on-call: his as well as mine. About as much fun as a double dose of clap, but a lot less fun than the process of obtaining.
Also, this town experimented with second-rate college football last fall and managed to snag a continuting "bowl" game for September. Not a real bowl, but an excuse to go to the stadium, drink beer, and watch football before humoungous freezing sets in. So I might take up the challenge.

It's Beer Thirty
Not quite. But it is a beautiful evening so I'm going to get my CaptainSQL ass away from this computer and down one or more martinis before the weekend foolishness sets in, and, even worse, before I become the much feared enforcer of don't touch production without a hall pass as I go on-call next week. Don't worry. The development DBAs haven't signed on to this so it will allow our lame developers and project managers to weasel their way into fixing their sadass screwups without having to show they deadbeat faces to upper management. They'll slither through this like wee-wee flowing downhill around any clogs and obstructions in the plumbing on the way to the lake.
Now what barfly wouldn't want to hear that story?
The weekend is already chopped up into little bitty pieces, so I may as well get the boozehounding in early. This is also a good excuse to do even less around the house. Getting pretty good at those excuses.
Hey, when my kid was over here last time I asked where the crackers were, and she just pointed to me. Do you think she's on to this blog?

Memory Leak
It's a hard job for this powerhouse of technical excellence to keep pace with those literary guys what talk good and write gooder that is also pitching in to keep Eric's Blog alive and innersing. They talk good. They talk real good. Me not so much. I'm tapped out on interesting stuff there so in those cases, it's always best to refer to Commander Cody and the Lost Planet Airmen.

I rule! Even more than ever!
Indeed, I, CaptainSQL, Lord of long running queries, Prince of Performance, Quing of Queries (no puns, please. Leave those to the professionals), Imperator of Indexing, Sultan of SQL, am now also Duke of Disk Space. Verily will the lowly analyst and programmer alike quiver at my awesome power. With righteousness shall I invoke the power of change control to whip project manage and architect alike into line. Stop laughing, Michele.
I Have Spoken!
Hey, can anybody get me a good deal on dry cleaning these stupid embroidered pants, and the cape?

The unknown forces that control babeosity have been kind to Cappy, as of late. This includes real life, too. Almost in compensation for recent discoveries being from the town of our much hated and reviled NFL rival, at least one of them offers the possibility of tickets to The Shoe in the fall. Reason enough to celebrate! But wait, there's more! Recent ventures to the Piggly-Wiggly have put Cappy in contact with a girl I once knew way back when. But this time she looks a lot better. She was alway a skinny bolink, but looks better with a few more pounds. And I'd never get caught up in that trick question Does this make me look fat? Also caught up with another female from even further back (no, not pre Civil-War!) that had her hottie period for a few years.
So, things are looking good in that department. Work on the next release of the software is underway. Hoo-hah, this is going to take a long time!Labels: Babe Magnet, techwhining

I may be guest blogging for StraightWhiteGuy, a truly flattering honor. Need to find other stuff to post about there. Probably home maintenance, and how to avoid it. Better pack up my best nouns, verbs, pronouns and adjectives and head over there.

That Foot is Me
Project teams are now on double secret probation. Correct change approval is now mandated for production, as it always should have been. It can best be enforced by code reviews, and armed DBAs, I say.

Misc.
Looks like Google has taken over my shortcut to blogger. Fine quality, guys. More cheap-ass no quality software.
Daughter is with me now. The mom is in the hospital again, probably more drama to follow. Very stale.
My sister here has another out of town job offer, this time in Chicago where LittleSis lives. I hope she takes this; it sounds like a very good deal. The only damn thing is the sub-rosa pool I had going with LittleSis when the one here was going to move a couple of years ago. I claim that only Evanston will suffice this one's environmental, farleft, peacenik, hippie-dippie tinfoilhat proclivities. But the job is within walking distance of Oak Park, so Cappy may have to pay up. In any event, it would be more incentive to visit Chitown, which is always a good idea.
A lady of mystery reappeared (actually re-mailed) lately from the babesearch earlier in the year. Very interesting.
