Noted personal friend's bitch ex-wife finally clobbered her daughter about college. She refused to sign for any loans or provide any money and told her to beg from her dad after the deadline for a deposit was over! It happens a lot. I don't want that to happen to my kid.

The girlfriend and I went to see Man on Fire last night. Actuall, the prints of the film should have been on fire, say an hour before it was shown. The violence level was good, but it was too damn slow. As noted on other blogs, the dad turned out to be a rat. Please pass the cheese. Maybe it can go on Lifetime TV soon.

I love tuckpointing. That's about the only thing I can get done without massive assembly of (the wrong) parts. And it's my lesiure time home repair hobby. My place is brick, and I've done a good job of keeping the front steps from disintegrating, even if they now look as if they've been visited by a friendly dragon with a bad case of the runs.
This ties into my theory of guys. Guys are either software or hardware guys. If you're in software, your first allegiance is to your pager. Any hardware job will fail due to lack of sustained effort. If you are into hardware you do not have the time to keep current on software. I know a programmer who is actually older than me. That's pretty old. He does a great job keeping his cars on the road. They are as old as the technology he supports.
And that's the way it is.

Home Improvements
How does a techie guy like me with bigtime DBA responsibilities, keeping the time with his kid, find time in his busy schedule to fix the house? Well, he doesn't. Repairs take a painfully slow pace here. The rule of thumb is if I can't get it done in an hour, I don't start it. Any longer term project leaves the place in a mess, and causes more cost than if I got a contractor for it in the first place.
That said, this year's project is "The Doors". I've planed the closet door for my kid's closet, fixed the door to my room and the bathroom door, and rehinged the door to the second floor. Working with so many of the unhinged, it's nice when I can rehinge something. If only I could rehinge people!
The two worst are getting replaced, the one to my daughter's room, and the outside door for the office.

Doing better today. I'm doing some real work at work again. It feels good.
I don't blog about politics much here. Others can do it better. I guess that one could say my problems with the court about custody are a liberal's dream. Social engineering imposed by judicial fiat when sensible people would never choose this bullshit on their own.

Still feeling bummed out. Talked with the attorney today. He sounded chipper. I reminded him to respond to my e-mail from about a week ago.

My daughter went back to her mom tonight for the start of school this week. It was a good vacation for her. Time is drawing shorter on the need to bell the cat on this private school tuition. She knows it can't go on forever. I wonder what she's thinking when she sees the $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ thrown around by her classmates.

Back from the big city. I think it was OK. My daughter seemed to like it. Shopping in weird ethnic neighborhoods was a big hit. Possible legal battles with the ex, and what to say to my daughter always creates a bad feeling, no matter if I'm on vacation. I had e-mailed my august attorney before leaving, and haven't gotten a response. Waiting for his advice is like waiting for a medical diagnosis that one dreads. Anyway, I've got the rest of the weekend off.

Thank you for your support. Now drop dead.
A friend of mine is nearing the end of child support. It's close to one thousand hours. His daughter has been accepted into college. Suddenly. of course, the mom turns out her pockets and pleads poverty when it comes to helping with college.
So, after years of trying to fire her dad as dad, it comes to the point of asking a man who has been villified for years for help. I don't know what the result will be. But this is far from the first case with which I'm familiar, where the kids get kicked out of the house when the support stops.
Note this disclaimer: I don't know if this will be the case for my daughter. This seems to be pretty common practice among mothers. There has been a lot of effort expended to attack me, everyone I know, everyone I did know and will know to my daughter. I resent those attacks. I don't know if they will have an impact on her. But I am growing less patient with any attitude resulting from the attacks. If a situation similar to that of my friend does occur, I don't know if I would be as receptive as he is to further financial assistance.

Whew, the big week of wacky testing is almost over. Next week I'm off to the big city with my daughter. I hope she will enjoy it. I'm looking forward to simply not being here.

Two late nights of big backups and recoveries on Cappy's secondary technology have goofed up your host's sleep cycles. That's part of the ride in the big world of database administration. Tomorrow will be a 9:00 AM Standing Tall meeting of the big project, brought to you be dial-in-from-home, followed by a day of recovering for this late night insomnia, and making up for lost time, then a later in day page if more recovery sehnanigans are requested.
Anyway, blogging is better than channel surfing through 46 versions of informercials, and SCOLA presenting news for former Soviet republics.

Dang it, Dale!
I score as Hank Hill in both Quizilla "Which King of the Hill Character Are You?" quizzes. But the cheesy website produced cut and paste HTML that doesn't produce the image. Are they offshored?
My daughter replied with choosing an inappropriate character from KOTH. This has been a sub-optimal weekend with her. Hell, 9 years of alienation talk coming from friends of the ex take a toll. We have a good enough relationship. But it's always damaged by friends of the ex at her school, in her congregation tossing poop on me. When the time comes to belly up to the bar on college, cars, vacations, helping her get over problems, where will these bastards be?
We'll be going to Chicago the week after next. I retrieved a good part of the missing history of Rock and Roll for under $10. I got Eagles, Cyndi Lauper, Steve Miller Band, and other fine tapes. It's cheap, but it really fills a gap in my music library. And it helps pass the time while rolling through the Midwest.

Less bummed out today, despite the usual delivery of a couple of late Friday PM "emergencies". Those are the kind that arrive too late in the week for anyone to do something about. They arrive on schedule.
I'm working through denial about needing to see the attorney about continued private school. I hate to send money to attorneys about this, but the matter being legal, as opposed to logical, that's where the $$ will go.
